For many businesses the start of a New Year often means the start of a new financial year and investment in activities that will deliver growth or help the business work more efficiently. It is also the time when businesses generally assess their budgets to review their position and make decisions for the remainder of their financial year.

For manufacturing businesses, a budget review or release of new budgets may lead to money being available to invest in new machinery or the refurbishment of existing machines. It could also mean a reshuffle of production lines to streamline processes.

Merritts have announced a rise in both revenue and profits in accounts filed for the financial year ended June 2018 following the appointment of new Finance Director Alan Cundy.

Revenue has increased by £1.56m to £5.52m and profits have more than doubled from £320,000 to £870,000 over the same period. Merritts now also employ 42 people.

Commenting, Managing Director, James Merritt said, “It has proved to be a very successful year following a number of changes at board level. We appointed finance director Alan Cundy, and I moved in to a more customer-facing role. This has improved cost control and operational efficiencies.”

Finance Director, Alan Cundy, added, “A significant programme of capital investment started in 2018 and will continue into 2019 and beyond. This investment will assist us in meeting the growing demand for machinery relocation services within the UK and Europe.”

So far in 2018, the Merritts has invested £1.4m in new plant and equipment to support the growth plans and increase operational capacity. This has included 4 new Scania S500 tractor units, 4 new customised Mercedes Benz Sprinter vans and 4 new Hyster fork lift trucks. A new £100,000 Nooteboom low loader is also on order for delivery in January 2019.

The company has also increased staff employee numbers: Former HSE inspector, Lincoln Marks, has been appointed as the new health & safety manager, further enhancing Merritts commitment to safety in the workplace. Four new team members have also been appointed for driver/engineering roles.

As part of its expansion plan, the company intends to increase revenue to £10m by securing more global machine moving projects on behalf of manufacturers selling new machinery to UK based companies.

Merritts has a blue chip client base of industry leading manufacturers and supply chain partners in sectors that use heavy machinery such as aerospace, defence, automotive, print, plastics & rubber, food production and waste & recycling.

When investing in the purchase of new heavy machinery, the availability of grants, interest rates and other economic factors may be significant in the timing of the decision, particularly if the investment is large and the payment of import duties and VAT becomes a considerable figure.

Often, the purchase of the machine can be funded using grants and loans which can be spread over manageable instalments. However, the payment of VAT and import duty is immediately payable in a lump sum. Using a bonded warehousing facility means that the machine can be purchased whilst funding is available and interest rates are favourable, but the payment of VAT and duty can be deferred until the machine is installed.

What is bonded warehousing?

By definition a bonded warehouse is a secure space, where goods liable to import duty or Value Added Tax (VAT) are stored, for a period of time until the goods are ready to be sold or moved to a new location.

This method of storage has obvious benefits for sellers who import and sell goods liable to these charges. By using our HMRC approved facility, we can help our clients defer payment of import duty and VAT on their machinery and equipment.

Key benefits of using Merritts bonded warehouse facility

  • The opportunity to purchase stock machinery without paying import duty & VAT until sold
  • Provides you with greater flexibility for supplying ‘quick turnaround’ machine deliveries to clients
  • Allows you to take advantage of favourable exchange rates when purchasing stock machinery
  • If you are unable to sell your machinery domestically, you can sell it for re-export without having to worry about the duties which would already have been paid
  • Where required, Merritts will handle the customs documentation to save you the hassle.

As an approved HMRC bonded warehouse, Merritts must adhere to the following requirements:

  • Meet HMRC’s conditions for your authorisation
  • Check goods when they arrive and record any shortages or surpluses
  • Set up stock records for goods and keep them secure
  • Keep stock records for at least 4 years
  • Give HMRC officers access to the warehouse, goods and records
  • Run the premises safely and make sure the warehouse meets health and safety standards

Our HMRC approved warehouse has over 80,000 square feet of internal storage space which is fitted with high and low bay lighting, overhead craneage for the handling of goods up to 10Te in weight and offer eaves heights of up to 10m. Our site is surrounded by 2.4m palisade fencing and CCTV is in operation.

If you would like to make a bonded storage enquiry please contact a member of our team on 0800 046 9840.

Please note, as a heavy machinery moving specialist, our customs bonded warehouse is only approved for ‘dry’ status for the storage of equipment and machinery. We do not have a ‘wet’ licence and are therefore not licenced to store goods such as alcohol, fuel or cigarettes.

Christmas may be a time for employee holidays and shutting up shop for many manufacturers, but for others, an empty factory is also an ideal time to move heavy machinery or carry out refurbishments and maintenance.

At Merritts we’re open 365 days a year, so if you are considering any of the following works, we’re here to help:

  • Relocating of heavy machinery
  • Production line alterations

heavy machinery refurbishment

Merritts has 60,000 ft² of internal warehouse space serviced by overhead cranes, and a further 80,000 ft² of external storage space. This enables us to offer manufacturing businesses and machine tool specialists the opportunity to use our facilities as a base from which to carry out heavy machinery refurbishment and maintenance.

This service is frequently provided during the transport of a heavy machine to a new location, before it is offered for resale, or before it is temporarily decommissioned. This is because the machine owner sees this as an ideal opportunity to carry out a full overhaul so that the machine arrives at its new location in the best possible condition.

Obviously, whilst the machine has been in operation, it will have had its routine maintenance inspections carried out to ensure its continued safe operation and to avoid production breakdowns, but often, this has meant tooling engineers and inspectors working in confined spaces which may have limited access to all parts of the machine.

By transporting the heavy machinery ‘mid-move’ to our facility, engineers can have unlimited space within which to work and can use specialist lifting equipment such as Versa-Lift forklifts and overhead gantry cranes to enable them to move and lift the machine to access all sides and complete the inspection and overhaul.

Our inventory of specialist machinery moving plant and lifting equipment provides a workable solution to every scenario. All of our equipment is subject to stringent maintenance and testing procedures.

Machine tools specialists that have been approved to work on our site will have access to specialist equipment including:

  • Enerpac Super Lift gantry system (SL125)
  • Heavy duty lift trucks
  • Versa-Lifts (lift capacity up to 36 Te)
  • Lorry mounted cranes
  • Mobile elevating work platforms
  • Lifting beams and frames
  • Rigging accessories

Space is available to hire on a short or long term basis, with rates calculated accordingly. The package can be tailored to suit requirements and can include lifting facilities and access to power if required.

If you have a heavy machinery refurbishment requirement and need space to carry out the works please get in touch.

heavy machinery transport

Joseph Merritt Group Plc has announced plans to invest £1.4 million in heavy machinery transport and lifting equipment as part of an ongoing strategy to expand services across the UK.

The company, which specialises in the lifting, removal, transportation, installation, and storage of heavy machinery and equipment has already invested in 4 new Scania S500 tractor units and will shortly take delivery of 4 new customised Mercedes Benz Sprinter vans and 4 new Hyster fork lift trucks. A new £100,000 Nooteboom flatbed trailer is also on order for delivery in January 2019.

In addition, Merritts has added to its fleet of Versa-Lift trucks following the £300k investment in a further 60/80 truck which has the capacity to lift and carry machinery weighing up to 35 tonnes, which is a valued asset to machinery end users and manufacturers. The Versa-Lift’s compact design also makes it an ideal solution when moving machinery in confined areas.

In total, Merritts will have invested £1.2 million in vehicles by the end of 2018. The remainder of the investment has equipped the new vehicles with bespoke toolboxes and lifting tackle, which includes specialist jacks, skates, chains and slings. This ensures each Merritts site engineer is fully equipped with the specialist tooling required to successfully carry out each project.

Commenting on the investment, James Merritt, Director, said, “We have ambitious plans for expansion over the next five years. We are investing in the equipment and people we will need to meet the growing demand for machinery movement services in the UK, Europe and beyond. It will also enable us to continue working for manufacturers who are moving factories or need to re-locate machinery within their existing premises.”

Funding for the investment was provided by Santander. Joseph Merritt Group Plc currently has a turnover of £6m and employs a team of 45 personnel who work from a fully equipped storage and bonded warehousing facility based in Kirkby in Ashfield, Nottingham. As part of its expansion plan, the company intends to increase revenue to £10m, create at least five new jobs and seek to attract more global machine moving projects on behalf of manufacturers selling new machinery to UK based companies.

The company has a blue chip client base of industry leading manufacturers and supply chain partners in sectors that use heavy machinery such as aerospace, defence, automotive, print, plastics & rubber, food production and waste recycling.

Merritts Machinery Movers are pleased to announce the appointment of Russell Taylor as the companies’ new Contracts Manager.

Russell brings more than 30 years’ experience in health and safety and project management to the role, after previously working with several leading manufacturers in the machine tool and engineering sectors.

As part of his role, Russell will now be responsible for the development of health and safety strategy and project management services, offering specialist support to the companies’ operations and technical sales teams.

After beginning his career as an engineering apprentice, Russell has gone on to gain significant experience with companies based throughout the Midlands, developing a wide range of skills within contracts, project management and health & safety.

Prior to joining the Merritts team, Russell spent 18 years as a specialist Logistics & Engineering Project Manager with an international machine tool manufacturer, offering support for the organisations sales and engineering teams.

The knowledge and experience that Russell has gained during his time in the machine tool sector makes him an ideal representative for our family firm and we look forward to many years of success with Mr Taylor.

Merritts Machine Movers recently completed the purchase of two brand new Mercedes Benz Actros 2651 Gigaspace tractor units to add to the companies current fleet of  specialist vehicles.

The new Actros 2651 6×4 cabs will be the first Mercedes models that Merritts will have operated in their 92 year history and the family firm will be using the vehicles to carry specialist loads, heavy machines and assist with factory relocation throughout the UK.

The new tractor units have been designed to carry up to 44 tonnes of gross trailer weight (gtw) under normal operations and up to 80 tonnes under the current STGO Category 2 regulations.  The new vehicles also feature the largest Gigaspace cab that Mercedes Benz currently offer to their commercial customers, which means greater comfort, space and practicality for the operator.

A wider selection of fuel efficient engines, ranging from a standard 175kW (238hp) unit up to a 460kW (625hp) unit, mean that the 2651 6×4 cab meets the current Euro 5 fuel efficiency and emissions regulations and offers far greater performance than the previous model.

The new vehicles will join Merritts’ existing fleet of Volvo and Scania cabs which are currently used on a regular basis to load, offload and transport heavy machinery for customers throughout the UK. The Actros is widely regarded as one of the most reliable and efficient models in the current Mercedes Benz range and the latest incarnation of the 2651 Gigaspace cab will make a welcome addition to the current Merritts fleet.

As part of Merritt’s bespoke services we provide safe and secure storage servicves for large loads and industrial equipment. This is often essential when equipment is being mothballed, sold on or can’t be transported to its final destination for a period of time. It is a key component of our comprehensive logistics services, although we also offer use of the storage facilities as a standalone service.

One of our key strengths is that we’re centrally located in the Midlands, conveniently close to the M1, giving us and our customers quick access to major routes North, South, East and West. Our secure facilities offer 150,000sqft of internal storage space, with another 80,000sqft external storage space for items that are not weather sensitive.

All of our warehouses are heated, equipped with overhead cranes that can lift up to 20 Tonnes, allow storage for items up to 10m in height and are protected with state of the art security systems. All of which is managed by our skilled warehouse team.

Storage Services

We have customers come to us looking for a variety of storage solutions, so we often tailor our services to suit each individual need. For instance, energy engineering firm Doosan Babcock needed to store some sensitive items that required regular maintenance and a permanent power supply to maintain correct temperature, humidity and performance. By closely following instructions our skilled team were able to fulfil all the manufacturer’s requirements for safely storing the equipment.

How short and long term storage these are some of the reasons why businesses choose to store their equipment with us:

  • Machinery manufacturers from all industry sectors often need a buffer storage solution prior to UK installation.
  • A piece of equipment may no longer be required but cannot be written off due to balance sheet value.
  • Manufacturers that downsize production on multiple sites by consolidating machinery may need to store some machinery prior to it being sold.
  • When manufacturers change their tooling or model they are still required to keep the old tools and parts for a specified time.
  • Used machinery dealers sometimes need a simple holding area or showroom to keep equipment prior to sale.
  • Auctioneers can require warehouse space in which to hold closed auctions or store machinery.
  • Many transport businesses can save fuel and time between drops to customers by using our central location to temporarily drop certain loads.

Storage services and HMRC bonded

Customs bonded warehousing

Our facilities are also popular with importers and exporters. Merritt’s premises are HMRC approved as a customs bonded warehouse facility, which means we can help our customers defer payment of import duty and VAT on their machinery and equipment.

These are the key benefits of our customs bonded warehousing facility:

  • Businesses can defer payment of import duty and VAT.
  • The opportunity to purchase stock machinery without paying import duty and VAT until they’re sold.
  • Provides customers with greater flexibility for supplying ‘quick turnaround’ machine deliveries to clients.
  • It also means you can take advantage of favourable exchange rates when purchasing stock machinery.
  • If you are unable to sell your machinery in the UK you can sell it for re-export without having to worry about the duties which would already have been paid.

Secure Storage Services

Rates start from £0.10 per square foot per week (£1.09 per square metre per week), which is inclusive of buildings insurance, rates, light, heat and power in the area dependent on use. Find out more about our storage services.
