Service Spotlight: Industrial Storage

We are able to offer businesses their own dedicated storage area for new high value machinery, can provide areas for companies who are relocating production and need secure industrial storage for valuable assets that need to remain on their balance sheet, or simply provide companies with  a large space and specialist lifting equipment in order to carry out refurbishment works.

STORAGE OF VEHICLE PARTS FOR A NATIONAL TRANSPORT COMPANY

A national transport company contacted us to see if we could help with a requirement to consolidate spare parts from various depots to a more centralised location in the UK. Initially we provided 10,000 ft² of industrial storage, but due to the flexible level of service we have provided, and our convenient Midlands location, they are now looking to continue the contract for a further 3 years and to double their storage requirement to 20,000 ft².

The customer would often arrange transport to our warehouses at short notice. We were able to provide the fast response required to meet the demands of these deliveries. We would then offload the items into our industrial storage facility. We employed various types of lifting methods and equipment for the offloading phases, depending on the type of parts being delivered. Overhead cranes and Versa-Lifts were used for the heavier and more awkward items and a variety of forklifts were used for the lighter and palletised items.

A project manager was assigned to ensure all deliveries were recorded and all items were correctly logged. Images were taken at point of delivery to provide evidence of safe receipt into our industrial storage facility. Whilst in storage, our clients service engineers were given access to the warehouse to carry out ongoing maintenance and inspection. Merritts operatives would be on hand to move the required parts from storage into an area to facilitate safe access for the engineers. If items were required to be removed from the Merritts site, we would provide a team and the necessary lifting equipment to ensure safe loading. We would then utilise our own transport fleet to deliver the items to the required destination.

PUMPSET HANDLING & INDUSTRIAL STORAGE FOR A BUILDING CONTRACTOR SPECIALISING IN WATER AND WASTE WATER INFRASTRUCTURE

The customer had a requirement for Merritts to provide a storage facility of 7,500 ft² in addition to the provision of transport and lifting facilities to collect 4 x pumpsets comprising of motors, screw pumps and ancillary equipment from the manufacturers based in the UK. Items were collected, transported and offloaded into our facility over a period of 1 x working week

This entailed the co-ordination with 3 individual manufacturers and involved the receipt of 8 trailers of equipment into a dedicated and fenced area. The heaviest individual items weighed 12 Tonnes each and these were lifted and maneuvered using a Versa-Lift 40/60 with maximum capacity of 27 Tonnes. The largest of the pumpset parts were over 9m in length and had to be lifted using a spreader beam to ensure that the items did not distort during the lift and move process.

Whilst in our facility, the manufacturers’ engineers were required to access the pumpsets as part of their ongoing maintenance schedule. Merritts’ engineers assisted the customer’s engineers with mechanical tasks and lifting during the period of the storage project. The 4 x motors were connected to a permanent power supply at our facility to ensure they maintained correct temperature, humidity and performance, as instructed by the manufacturer.

When the eventual delivery date was agreed with the end client, the Merritts’ team worked with the manufacturers’ engineers to build the individual pumpset parts into 4 x fully working pumps prior to delivery. Parts were lifted using Versa-Lifts and Merritts’ mechanical engineering team were responsible for making the physical connections to build the pumps. Each pumpset was built over a period of 5 x working days. Fully assembled pumpsets were then loaded to transport, delivered to site and offloaded into position using lorry mounted cranes.
