Special Projects

Merritts have been specialists in Special Projects for over 50 years.

Our unrivalled experience has allowed us to develop an in-depth portfolio of special moving and lifting projects. From the relocation of boats to the delivery and installation of stone statues, we would be happy to consider any heavy lifting and transportation enquiry.

We are able to offer specialist advice and provide engineering solutions for all your specific requirements. Detailed method statements and risk assessments will be prepared in order to ensure all aspects of the project operation meet your approval before commencement of works.

Our investment into the acquisition of heavy lifting equipment and plant means we can supply alternative lifting services and solutions that are not widely available in the UK. This therefore enhances our resources and enables us to satisfy the growing needs of our customers.

As with all projects, attention to detail is key. Our team has been involved with both the planning and execution of numerous types of lifting operations in an extensive range of locations and confined environments. Tasks are completed successfully and on schedule, reducing down time where possible whilst also working meticulously to find you budget savings where achievable.

From conception to completion, Merritts’ project managers will give you all the support you need: They will attend site to analyse the extents of your requirements and advise on all matters from scheduling, services and stock movements. Our managers will integrate into your management team to create a partnership, ensuring both companies work together to achieve a successful outcome.

We can also provide secure industrial storage & bonded warehousing for any of your items that cannot be delivered immediately.  With warehouse sites based around the East Midlands and located conveniently near the M1, our storage division is perfectly located to service the needs of customers requiring both short and long term storage. Our warehouses are all heated, fitted with high and low bay lighting and offer eaves heights of up to 10m if required for tall items. All Merritts’ warehouses are controlled by a warehouse manager and dedicated admin team. These teams are responsible for all logistical arrangements relating to the stored goods. Storage services can be offered as an extension to our transport and haulage services without cost as part of a contract if required.

Our special project service is provided in line with RHA Conditions of Carriage 1998, RHA Special Conditions for Carriage of Abnormal Indivisible loads 1995 and CMR Conditions of Carriage. A copy of these documents is available on request.

Case Study

The complex and prestigious installation comprised of 3 phases:

Execution of trial lift of hollow bronze statue of Robin Hood out of public view to establish points of balance and correct weight.

Installation of 2 sections of an oval polished granite plinth; each section weighing 1.3 tonnes. The plinth sections were lifted by fork truck onto a machinery bogie. They then had to be moved through the operational airport concourse across 60 metres of newly installed polished marble floor. To protect the floor our operatives constructed a protective trackway of plywood and heavy polythene sheeting. The plinth sections were then lifted into position onto a 7 metre high pedestrian mezzanine level over a glass and stainless steel balustrade. This part of the installation required detailed CAD lifting plans and further floor protection with aluminium load bearing panels to remove point loading under the crane outriggers. The crane selected for the job was Unic tracked mini-crane with remote control; ideal for the restricted access via doors of less than 2.5m x 1.75m. Power for the crane was provided by a silent-pack diesel generator positioned outside of the building.

The above operation was then repeated at a later date with the statue body.

In addition to constraints imposed by the marble flooring and restricted door access, Merritts were required to work to further special requirements. All work on site had to be undertaken after the last departure at 2300hours and before the first passenger arrivals at around 500hours. Equipment allowed in the building was restricted to electrically operated. Operational retail stores were situated within 5 metres of the working area. Throughout the project our personnel adhered to the stringent safety and security measures necessary at airport sites.
