Specialist Transport & Heavy Haulage

Merritts have been providers of Specialist Transport and Heavy Haulage services for nearly ninety years.

Our fleet comprises Semi Low Loaders, Standard Low Loaders and Wafer Deck Low Loaders capable of carrying loads of up to 80Te as well as crane trailers, flatbeds and curtain siders. We have recently invested heavily in a pristine fleet of Volvo tractor units to ensure that our fleet is always at the forefront of our marketplace for image, functionality and reliability.

We are able to undertake and coordinate all types and sizes of specialist transport work including simple in-gauge loads to more complex notifications, road closures and pan European deliveries. Our specialist transport service extends to covering all necessary paperwork for both UK and European deliveries.

In addition to our low loader fleet, our company is highly skilled in load rigging and moving. We have in house equipment and expertise to lift, handle and install items of all sizes weighing up to 200Te as an extension to our specialist transport services and as such , we are able to provide a lifting and heavy haulage solution to all of your load moving requirements.

Our specialist transport operation is based in Nottinghamshire and provides a central location from which to service the UK. Our site is based over a four acre area and comprises six warehouses and a large expense of yard. We have invested heavily in our facilities which are :-

- Fully secure with CCTV coverage across the site
- High Density concrete yard specifically installed for heavy haulage movements
- 100,000 sqft of storage area
- Warehouses with 10m headroom for high and large loads
- Lifting facilities to 200Te

We are therefore also able to offer storage services for specialist transport loads that cannot be delivered immediately. This can be offered as an extension to our transport and haulage services without cost as part of a contract if required.

All Specialist Transport and Heavy Haulage services are provided in line with RHA Conditions of Carriage 1998, RHA Special Conditions for Carriage of Abnormal Indivisible loads 1995 and CMR Conditions of Carriage. A copy of these documents is available on request.

Case Study

In 2000 Merritts were employed by the aerospace suppliers to install machinery on its first floor production area in Ilkeston. Seven years later, some of the machines were to be relocated to the ground floor as part of a production restructure.

The seven machines comprised various Bridgeport CNC lathes, weighing a maximum 4T.
Access from the first to ground floor was provided by an aperture in the floor slightly larger than the largest machine. Such restricted access called for an innovative relocation process.

Merritts were able to supply the same personnel who had initially installed the machines and so were familiar with both the equipment and site conditions.
The relocation process commenced with the removal of motors and guards from the machines prior to jacking onto machine moving skates and positioning adjacent to the floor opening.

Simultaneously an industrial lift truck was positioned on the ground beneath the aperture and the forks were raised through the opening to first floor level. The machines were each skated onto the forks and lowered through the opening to the ground floor. They were then moved through the factory to a new position where they were lined, leveled and reassembled.

Challenges on this project came as a result of the restricted access between the floors. The dimensions of the floor opening were very close to those of the machines and necessitated extreme precision in handling and excellent communication between the personnel of each floor level.

The project was completed successfully with minimal disruption to ongoing production.
